Renato is an expert on funerals. In his little notebooks he meticulously notes the time and place of each funeral service, adding a few distinctive details about the deceased. And then he attends one funeral after another, all day, every day. A few well-chosen words and that’s it: friends and family are in tears, just as he wants them to be.
Renato is alone, but he was not always so. At one time his life was filled with his exuberant wife Lidia and his lively son Luca. A normal family, a simple life: his job as a municipal clerk, vacations at the beach, lots of love, a few quarrels. Until one day Renato’s life collapses and from then on death becomes his constant but unattainable companion, something he avoids and seeks at the same time. But fate still holds surprises for Renato, starting with the mysterious woman, unfailingly dressed in black and with a small notebook in her hand, who seems to follow him from one funeral to the next… With a direct but intensely poetic style, Mario Zangrando weaves a story that captivates and moves us, reminding us that life can always change for the better, even when it seems there is no hope left.
