Venice, 1754. On the eve of the famed Feast of the Redeemer, a series of strange events leads Alvise Geminiani and the Angeli Neri (Black Angels) — the Inquisition’s secret corps of agents — to suspect that someone is plotting a coup d’état. Marco Leon, still recovering from a serious wound sustained months earlier, longs to return to active duty and join the investigation. Concerned for his health, however, Geminiani assigns him what seems a minor case: a young patrician, Guido Manfrè Veniero, has killed a household valet, and his guilt appears beyond doubt. Yet the nobleman’s fiancée, Cecilia Todesco, begs Geminiani to intervene, hoping to clear the man she loves.
Eager to escape the inertia of months spent convalescing at home, Marco accepts the assignment. The two investigations, initially separate, gradually become entwined, revealing unexpected connections. Guido Manfrè appears to be implicated in the events leading to the attempted coup, but the interests at stake are many and the affair seems inextricable. In Venice, nothing is as it seems: beneath the surface of the canals lies a web of dark secrets threatening the city’s delicate balance of power. As Marco pieces together the threads of both investigations, he finds himself facing an ever more complex mystery. Will he uncover the truth behind the murder, confront the killer, and stop the conspiracy in time to save — once again — the Serenissima?
